Cotton Bags, an Eco-Friendly way for boosting Cotton Business in India

Once upon a time, in Ancient and British Ruled India, Cotton used to be a fabric which had come into great demand for making products like Cloths and Bags. The reasons for such a rampant demand for Cotton in India were India’s hot climate and the cost effectiveness of this fabric as compared to other costlier fabrics like Silk and Rayon. In this way, Cotton started becoming an important cash crop for cultivation in Western India over the past so many centuries.

In today’s time, the Indian State of Maharashtra produces the maximum amount of Cotton as a cash crop and Sugar as a food crop. In order to overcome this financial crisis, various bag manufacturing companies have now started the production of Cotton Bags.

Keeping environmental concerns in mind, various types of Eco-Friendly bags are being made. Cotton Bags are one of them. Since Cotton is a bio-degradable material so the bags made out of it are very environment friendly. Even after destroying a Cotton Bag, it can readily mix within the soil thus preventing land pollution.

Friendly Bags, a hostile business in 21st Century India

There was a time in Ancient and British Ruled India, when Eco-Friendly Cash Crops like Jute and Cotton ruled the roost, precisely cash crop markets. East India mainly comprising of present West Bengal, Bangladesh and Southern Assam was very rich in cultivation of Jute as a Major Cash Crop. Similarly, Western India comprising mainly of present Maharashtra, Southern Gujarat and Northern Goa was very rich in cultivation of Cotton as a Major Cash Crop.

In today’s time, the businesses of these cash crops are facing huge financial hurdles in the Commerce Sector of India. In most Indian villages and towns, farmers are not getting a good deal for their crops within the fiber market from the whole sellers. Even in many Indian cities, Jute Mills and Cotton Factories are being shut down. The reasons for shutting down are wage problems as well as losses incurring in their businesses. In West Bengal, in Kolkata City alone, most Jute Mills have shut down due to the above reasons and another big reason has been politically motivated trade unionism. Even Cotton Factories in Mumbai City have met with the same fate during the past 30 Years.

During the past 5 years or so, Jute and Cotton have made some progress by getting their businesses rejuvenated. This has been possible by introducing these fibers in designing of products like bags and other accessories related to Fashion and Crafts. Now cloths and scarves are also being made out of Cotton and Jute but such items do brisk business in Summer Season only. Now being seasonal fabrics, their cloths are over powered by their Silk and Polyester Counterparts in winters and Monsoon.

In order to make these fabrics of Jute and Cotton, some Eco-Friendly Product Companies have started manufacturing products like Bags. These Jute Bags and Cotton Bags being environment friendly are doing good business in the market and are also being made at times in a stylish way, to attract potential clients from the Fashion Industry. It’s now about time that the Union Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Textile along with the Union Ministry of Labour & Employment under Union Government of India take strong measures to strengthen this new business of Jute Bags and Cotton Bags for saving these Cash Crops.

This styling can make bags look trendy and not old fashioned. It’s a way of making a bag look attractive towards the customers in the market.

This styling is done by decorating the bags with additional designs like Embroidery, Sparkles, Colored Painting and so on. Apart from designs, bags are also made into various shapes and sizes for giving each one of them a distinct look. Jute Bags, the Rejuvenation of a promising but forgotten business in India

There was a time when the cultivation of Jute Plant was rampant in Ancient India. Its Eastern Region consisted of present West Bengal, Bangladesh and parts of Southern Assam. Jute is a cash crop known as “patsan” in Hindi. After 1947, especially during the 1980s and 1990s, Jute as a fiber started losing its popularity in the manufacturing sector as other fabrics like Nylon and Polythene were preferred more in the making of products like Bags and Cloths. Even the Cottage Industry Sector in India, which is considered as the Small Scale Industry started opting for other fabrics like Cotton over Jute. It was a time when Jute Business was facing its toughest time both in Urban as well as in Rural India.

Now time has changed for Jute Business in India. As far as Jute Business and Jute Crop Cultivation are concerned, India has become the Largest Producer of Jute in the World, followed by Bangladesh at the second position. Some of the Jute Mills which were shut down in East India, especially in the East Indian State of West Bengal during the 1980s and 90s have started manufacturing Jute Fiber again for industries involved in the business of Jute Products.  Many companies involved in manufacturing of Craft and Fashion Accessories have started using Jute as a fabric for producing their products.

Since the past ten years or so, the awareness towards using Environment Friendly materials while making many kinds of products has prompted manufacturing companies to use Eco-Friendly materials like Jute. Nowadays apart from bags, even cloths are being made of Jute. Apart from being Eco-Friendly, Jute is also a very economical fiber to use. Even consumers are now finding Jute Products very easy to buy as they are available at very reasonable prices. Now only time can tell that how much more will the popularity of Jute increase by the days passing through in the World, especially in India.
